The Back in Time Challenge

Yesterday morning The PoetThe BeanThe Sisters and The Mom had a Challenge brainstorming meeting.  After working on the project for the last several months we realized that talking about ideas together helps us to fine tune an idea into a really good Challenge.

Here is what we came up with:
If you could magically go back in time and give any book to any person... who would that person be and what book would you give them?
Tell the BFWP a story about which person and what book you chose! Read the other comments to help get you started.

*Please note that the Little Sister has asked that we be sure to include characters from books as the people in history, so she says, "it is okay to use your imagination!"

Use the following format for your comment
Title of Book, Author, Name of the person from history and more about why your chose both!

9 comments:

  1. Of Thee I Sing
    Barack Obama

    Martin Kuther King Jr.

President Barack Obama's children's book was just released, we haven't gotten our copies in the mail yet, but I have seen a few of the pages and they move me, in so many ways.

Last night when thinking about this Challenge, I immediately thought of giving Martin Luther King Jr Of Thee I Sing to show him that the work he began took root and brought forth new leaders... and that one of those leaders (our current president!) wrote a book to his daughters and in that book this leader chose to tell his daughters about Martin Luther King himself... I am guessing that the book would make MLK Jr feel pretty good.

I bought copies of the books for each of The Sisters and cannot wait to try to get the books signed, one day, by President Obama himself!

The Little Sister has THREE! The Mom typed as The Little Sis dictated!

    Brambly Hedge
    Jill Barklem

    and

The Little House on the Prairie Series
    by Laura Ingalls Wilder

Laura Ingalls Wilder when she was a kid!

I would give her the books because I like Brambly Hedge and I think she would like it too. And I want to tell her I love her books so much that I want to give them BACK!

    Toot and Puddle
    by Hollie Hobby

    to Toot and Puddle

I want to give the books to Toot and Puddle because they are so cute and I love them so much! I imagine that Toot and Puddle are really real and I want to give the real Toot and Puddle the books --I think that they would like to see themselves in a book!

  3. George's Secret Key to the Universe

    by Stephen and Lucy Hawking

    to Mr. (President) George Washington

Why him? Because I think it would be funny to send a science fiction/real science book to someone back then, sort of as a prank in a way. If George thought that there would be computers to draw doorways to go anywhere in outer space, I think that he might go a little crazy. He might not understand any of it, but then again he might --I think he would like a computer, then he would be able to track the British Army and contact other people very quickly...

...I think maybe he might like the science!

Love is a Family by Roma Downey.

I would give this book to my big brother Augusto Beer, who lived with us as a foreign exchange student in the 80s. He was from Guinea Bissau and was very dark skinned. As a young girl, I liked him for his unending kindness, his puzzling differences (why doesn't he notice that fly on his face!)his mastery of soccer. I was also uneasy. I wondered what people would think of my family with a Black brother - from a tribe in Africa!

Now I just look upon his memory with love. I would like to give him this book (or maybe there's an even better one!) about the concept of family and the idea that it's certainly many things. Not just a Mom, a Dad and the children they gave birth to. Augusto is my big brother and he always will be. I would like to go back in time and tell him this.

Oooh. I love this challenge. Here's another!

The Poet's poetry by John Daniels (unpublished for now)

I would give these works to Grandpa and Grandma Horan. Momma lost her parents at a young age. I want them to know what a wonderful man she married. His heart is poured out in his writing, and his love of God, life and his family are breathtakingly apparent. I would love for my grandparents to see the kind of man their daughter was going to marry. Their angel wings would have been a little stronger for it!

  6. i've been thinking of this all day. LOVE this challenge!!

i'd go back in time and give MYSELF this book:
Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life by Thich Nhat Hanh

because when i read it, the world settled on its axis. it would have been nice to read it earlier, and absorb some of the wisdom to make my path a bit smoother and kinder. and the dishwashing essay? might have made countless hours a bit more happy, LOL.

  7. I Have a Dream: Writings and Speeches That Changed the World, by Dr. King. I'd give it to Abraham Lincoln to show him the legacy of his life.

  8. Rats! I'm going to sound like a copy cat. I was going to say I would like to give The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama to Abraham Lincoln.

I'd give The Living Great Lakes, Jerry Dennis, to Stephen Mason, the first governor of Michigan. I think that speaks for itself.
