Gods & Generals by Jeff Shaara...I've been on a Civil War binge, mixing up historical accounts with historical fiction.
Gods & Generals views the war from the (fictionalized) personal viewpoints of Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and other commanders from both sides of the fence.

  7. Just Kids by Patti Smith. Yeah, the hard-rockin' 2011 RockHall inductee. THAT Patti Smith. A present from Daughter M, it has the holiest beginning of any book I've read. Wow!

I'm reading The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen. It's for my book group. I read it many years ago, when it first came out, so this is my second go-round with it. I have to say, it's a dazzling display of writerly skill and storytelling, but there's something about it that's wearing me down. Not just because it's long. Partly, I think, because of the tone. It's satirical, I suppose. But I think it's that Franzen doesn't seem to have compassion for his characters. There's something, maybe, cold about it. And then being a writer myself, I begin to feel that I could never even come close to the bravura of his performance, so . . . that's the start of 2012 for me.

My first book for the year was Don't Cry For Me Aberystwyth by Malcolm Pryce. On a bit of an Aberystwyth kick atm - just read the other two I hadn't come across as well: From Aberystwyth With Love, The Day Aberystwyth Stood Still. Simply brilliant. Of course if you know anything about Wales or are a fan of writers such as Jasper Fforde, then you'll love them too :)
