I was on a long plane ride and the turbulence was horrific, the man seated next to me, literally had white knucklesa as he grasped the edge of his table with one hand, eating his one cookie like a squirrel with the other hand, these tiny, little, nibbling bites. I don’t know which unsettled me more, his fear or my fear.

So I turned to him and asked him, “what the heck is turbulence anyway?”

He looked at me, laughed, the crumbs of his cookie in his grey beard, his eyes glistening, he looked so relieved, I could cry, just now thinking of his face.

We were both alone in our fear (our darkness) as soon as I asked him, we started talking and laughing —and we asked for extra cookies, and the rest of the flight I learned about a grand father who taught physics for 30 years and dreamed of building cathedrals and then listening to music in them. He asked me all about myself and listened the way the best teachers do.

We’re now friends on Facebook and we actually keep in touch.

We were alone on our fear, but let it all go as soon as we started talking.

I still don’t understand turbulence, but I understand it better thanks to Van Gogh and you all.

Glad you’re back guys. More please!Margonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5154649481632827304.post-14199539506126622452017-09-15T08:16:39.650-04:002017-09-15T08:16:39.650-04:00Great to hear from you Darrell, you are not the fi...Great to hear from you Darrell, you are not the first person to contact us with questions about McMurdo Library.

Unfortunately, we do not have the latest on the library at McMurdo, but we will add it to our follow up stories. This book is one everyone must read. I read it around the age of 13 and it gave me a better perspective on life. Lots of times the books that give better perspectives are the ones that are banned. I don't want to put it down!

While the story deals with very harsh themes the way it's told seems so unashamedly true and real that you let the story take you where it wants to go instead of thinking that you know something about it.

I love all of the information Ozeki adds as well as the prospect that her writing has some historically and true cultural elements. Why that one, read when I must have been 7 or 8 is the first I don't know, but I know it set me on the path to be a vampire reader. I love to read because I was raised in first an apartment and then a house full of books and readers. My father reads both to learn and to escape. My mother reads to learn and to figure out how to make things: food, clothing, money, the most of life. My younger sister reads for her own reasons and my younger brother for his, too. My favorite books are many, but several I shall mention here I wish were better known. A Barrel of Laughs A Vale of Tears, The Silent Gondoliers by William Goldman, Memoirs of a Bookbat by Kathryn Lasky, The Silver Kiss by Annette Kurtis Klause and East of the Sun, West of the Moon by Mercer Mayer. Each has served me well and will, I hope, for many years to come.
